Converse College Milliken Fine Arts Center Spartanburg, South Carolina
This award-winning, 13,600-square-foot addition to the existing fine arts facility provides inspiring studio spaces and faculty offices to serve the expanding fine arts programs at this private women’s college. The sensitive addition respects the original 1971 building through material use and formal expression, but creates vibrant spaces with large expanses of natural light and color. The project included renovations to existing spaces as well as the building’s mechanical systems. The addition also includes eight new art studios with lofts for faculty offices, classrooms, laboratories, faculty and administrative offices, and gallery. This project was awarded: the 2009 AIA South Atlantic Region Merit Award , the 2004 AIA South Carolina Merit Award, the 2003 AIA Greenville Merit Award, and the 2002 Metal Architecture Honorable Mention Award.
