South Fork Raw Water Pump Station & Intake Structure Abingdon, Virginia

In 2011, M. B. Kahn completed the $3.3 million construction of a raw water intake structure that was designed by The Lane Group. The South Fork Intake is located on the fast-moving Holston River, M. B. Kahn also built the intake’s corresponding raw water pump station. The pump station is located in a 60 foot deep wet well. Varying soil conditions were a challenge in this project. The conditions included very loose soils to solid rock, all of which were encountered in the deep pump station excavation.
